Backseat Mafia's Psych Insight – Flowers Must Die

It reads:

PSYCH INSIGHT: MEET, FLOWERS MUST DIE

It is almost a standard opening paragraph about how strong the Swedish ‘psych’ music scene is at the moment, but when you have a list of bands that includes Hills, Goat, Les Big Byrd, The Janitors, Yuri Gagarin, and numerous groups on labels such as PNKSLM it is not something that can really be ignored. I could go on but this post isn’t about them or how many of them I can think of, rather it is to say that the home of (International) Harvester seems to be an almost exhaustible progenitor of amazing freaky music.

I now need to add Sweden/London based Flowers Must Die (named after the Ash Ra Temple track) to this list. I have been listening to a couple of the band’s tracks for a while now ever since I scored a single off Rickard from the band at the Liverpool Psych Fest, one of several slabs of vinyl that are currently available (see the band’s Discogs page for a fully list of available releases)...

Goat – I Sing in Silence in Vinyl Factories records of the week

It reads:

Goat
‘I Sing in Silence’
(Rocket)

Moving further away from their earlier more frenzied ‘world music’, Goat are slowly being scrubbed and cleaned. ‘I Sing in Silence’ puts a flute to the fore and has ecstatic singing over the jaunty afro-beat style rhythms. A worthwhile attempt at the sort of laid back psychedelic tie-dye jam you might hear drifting out of a tent at a summer festival.

Teeth of the Sea live in Portugal review by Music and Riots

It reads:

Teeth Of The Sea // Understage - Teatro Rivoli, Porto

The venue chosen to receive Teeth Of The Sea needs to be mentioned. Teatro do Rivoli, a centennial building and one of the most emblematic of the city of Porto, and surely of the entire country of Portugal, opened its basement in the understage to receive the British and London-based quartet.

Oddly enough, the environment was more of an old club in New York, which, don’t get me wrong, it made sense since the music delivered is kind of given to those sort of things. Presenting their latest and fourth full-length album, Highly Deadly Black Tarantula, Teeth Of The Sea made the cold night warm with their insistence to be all the way through electrifying with their mix of noise, psychedelic, electronic, experimental, and metal music. It’s the kind of show that promotes and even requests a certain eclecticism

Louder than War give Necro Deathmort's new album The Capsule a big thumbs up

It reads:

Necro Deathmort – The Capsule
Out 3rd June 2016

Louder then War have a listen to this genre bending sci-fi film soundtrack mentalists

Ok, from the start, the name Necro Deathmort is a complete misnomer. Sounding like some death metal band with an undecipherable moniker, Necro Deathmort are a purposely “ridiculous/misleading” name for a break off band formed whilst the original band’s drummer was reported ‘awol’. This creation is a collaboration between Matthew Rozeik and AJ Cookson and having since becoming a twosome, they have, according to their label, been “frightingly prolific, releasing a total of ten releases both on Distraction records and on Rozeiks’s own ‘Extreme Ultimate label’”. This is some feat! And I have to be honest; I wasn’t expecting great things from these.

Please don’t get me wrong. I love death metal and noise bands, spazcore, metal core, deathcore, whatever your core. I don’t discriminate. I love a bit of it all...

DN reviews Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation live in Stoclkhom

Th review of their recent show supporting Cult of Luna roughly translates to:

“Klaus Dinger, leader of legendary krautrock band Neu! preferred not using ‘motorik’ for the central beat of the genre, but instead named it ‘endless Gerade;’ an eternal reach. Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation seem to have taken that as their cue.

Their fuzzed out kraut rock accelerates along a Californian high way where the honey golden light is split into kaleidoscopic fractal patterns. Some tracks border on spaced out space country, others glide into guitar figures like those of The Cure, but the music steadily moves toward the horizon."

Hey Colossus's Acidliner releases new tape called Acid Church

Drummer Rhys from Hey Colossus has a new tape coming out under his Acidliner moniker this Friday:

The press release reads:

ACIDLINER - ACID CHURCH

Cassette and D/L released May 20th from here  Acid Liner

Following on from a pumped acid bass 12inch debut on Gangsigns label, a digital funk electro ep last year on Serbian label WaxxTrax and a bunch of radio play on BBC6 Music’s (Erol Alkin / Danial Avery) here comes a new self release ‘mixed tape’ from Acidliner featuring a bunch of new material along with cuts from pals Drumm Chimp (Part Chimp) and Nighthammer (Notorious Hi-Fi Killers) as well as his other alias DRMCNT.

Leaning more towards atmospheric hypno-psych Acid Church was recorded live to tape with just a pair of Technic 1200s and 4track tape machine.  Murky acid glitches and beeps open the title track which spirals in to a deep acid throb. 10mins in and we are hit with a minimal techno DRMCNT cut which samples Drake’s ode to Michael Jacksons famous Red Jacket.   Side2 brings the Juno pads out before “Phobia” lets the 303 baselines kick in and the 808 drums stab. Its totally blazed on the open road.

The cassette is limited to 50 copies with comes with a free DL and you can also grab the digital download on its own.

Soundblab gives Goat – I Sing in Silence a 9/10 review

It reads:

I Sing in Silence
Goat
Release date: 2016-05-27

Goat, masked avengers of the psychotropic world-beat scene, return with more unbridled fun, this time choosing not to plug in. The success of Goat has always been the underlying hypnotic groove, the overarching polyrhythms and a vocal pairing that sound like they’re partying 24/7. Nothing has changed here except that this double side is much more dense and substantial than the last single ‘It’s Time for Fun’.

Goat continue to grow, perhaps literally, as a collective, and on ‘The Snake of Addis Ababa’ they invoke the modal genius of Mulatu Astatke and the unusual tonalities of North African music to brilliant effect...

The Monitors interviews Teeth of the Sea

Ahead of their Raw Power performance in a couple of weeks, The Monitors asked Teeth of the Sea some questions:

It’s that time of year again, when knobbly knees emerge from trousered legs and season-maddened bees start attacking unsuspecting flowerbeds. The sun is out and it’s officially summer, which also means it’s nearly time for the 2016 instalment of Baba Yaga’s Hut’s brain-meltingly excellent exploration of noise, Raw Power Festival.

The last two years of the Tufnell Park-based festival have been an absolute blast, with more highlights than a Camden Town hair salon, and this year’s line-up is looking to be just as good. So to celebrate its onrushing arrival we interviewed three bands, one from each of Raw Power’s three days, in order to get a flavour of what’s in store this year.

First up are Friday night highlights and returning Raw Power favourites – Teeth Of The Sea…

Watch Gnoomes perform Myriads of Bees from new Split EP Repetitions

Here is some amazing footage of Gnoomes performing the track Myriads of Bees which is taken from their split EP with Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation called REPETITIONS released on 20 May.

The Quietus wrote this about it: The Quietus

You can preorder the EP that is ltd to 300 copies from here: Rocket Bandcamp

The band wrote the following about this video:

The video was shot at Hi-Fi Music Shop ‘Volta’ in our native city Perm. Friend of ours who works there proposed us to play gig at 'Volta' to celebrate Record Store Day. We were really amused by the atmosphere and decided that it’d be great to use this spot as a place of shooting our new live video. Speaking of production we couldn’t do it without our friends Dima Rategov (you can see his logo in the beginning of the video) and Alice Calypso who are our constant video - operators (both participated in making of Roadhouse and My Son - Rooftop Live).

This is a slightly different version of the  'Myriads Of Bees' that will come out on our split EP with Josefin Ohrn + The Liberation called Repetitions on May 20. We’d define that track as ‘kosmische pop’, the lyrics were sang in German as greetings to one of our favorite songs by Harmonia ‘Immer Wieder’ from their second album 'Deluxe'.

Freq and OneMetal review Teeth of the Sea at Desert Fest

After a short break to refuel I head over to The Black Heart to catch Teeth Of The Sea. The Heart is certainly the hottest and sweatiest venue of the weekend and also the one place where people are queuing down the stairs to try and get in to see bands. The only problem with the Heart is if you are near the back it’s quite hard to see the band on the stage at times (but this is only a small complaint as I’ve seen many fine groups play there). TOTS play an energetic set using the full orchestra of their sound to wash over the audience. Jimmy Martin’s guitar work is quite wonderful and moving at times, as it caresses the songs in a warm fuzzy glow. Their sound is a wonderful breath of fresh air after the heavy fug of so much (terrific) pounding metal and proves that this years line-up is probably one of Desertfest’s most eclectic.

Read the rest here: Freq

-

I’ve liked Teeth of The Sea since I first saw them way back when at Supersonic 2011, and have always had a lot of time for them. I was expecting a pretty decent performance from a band I quite enjoy, but was instead pleasantly surprised by what was the best performance of the Friday for me. Their trademark wobbly chaos held together by relentless, insistent bass is organic and full of life, far more so than you might expect from this kind of music. The arrangements grow and change beautifully, forming a complex ecosystem of tonalities and textures that moves with the stately grace of a change of seasons. Exotic trumpet melodies, soaked in delay peal wildly above the pounding synth bass. When you watch Teeth of The Sea (as everyone reading this must one day do) close your eyes and allow them to transport you to an alien world.
