Flowers Must Die in Bandcamp Daily's 'The New Face of Prog Rock'

It says:

Flowers Must Die
The roots and influence of progressive rock’s ‘70s icons aren’t far from the surface for Flowers Must Die. Their name comes from the title of an Ash Ra Tempel track, and they have a song of their own titled “After Gong,” a reference to the iconic Canterbury Scene band Gong. The Swedish group certainly lean more toward prog’s cult fringe, which they filter into hallucinatory jam sessions that veer from noisy space excursions to wobbly, synth-laden disco prog. Flowers Must Die aren’t afraid to embrace the weird, which ends up being one of their greatest assets. The farther out they travel, the more thrilling the journey.

The Most Radicalist reviews Julie's Haircut's Burning Tree single

They say:

JULIE'S HAIRCUT BURNING TREE
Italian experimental-psych veterans Julie's Haircut have been around since the late nineties. Their 20-year career has so far seen collaborations with the likes of Damo Suzuki (CAN), Sonic Boom, Philip Corner and Valerio Cosi to name a few. The bands latest single 'Burning Tree' is a complex exploration of electronica meets post-punk and new-wave. There are hints of Primal Scream, Suicide and Depeche Mode in there, but the result is something totally fresh. Intricate electronic drum beats propel a buzzing wave of modulated synthesizers and gloomy bass guitar, which swell hazily below the eerie vocals. 'Burning Tree' arrives right on cue for Julie's Haircut's UK tour, which kicks off tonight at The Brewhouse in East London.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in Drowned in Sounds 'Bands to Watch at Liverpool Psych Fest'

They say:

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs
(Saturday 23rd. District. 1815)

Hailing from Newcastle, this five-piece might be ridiculed by some for their memorable moniker (also occasionally known as Pigs x 7 in some quarters). However, their noise-laden doom rock sits somewhere between the skull crushing menace of Godflesh and Black Sabbath's classic stoner riff fests. Debut long player Feed The Rats came out earlier this year and captures the raw intensity of their live sets. Ignore at your peril.

Goat appear in Bandcamp feature on Horror Psychedelia

Bandcamp have published a feature 'A Dark Descent Into the Shadowy World of Horror Psychedelia' and amongst the artist they have chosen is Goat.

This is what they say:

Rock ‘n’ roll’s relationship with the occult begins with the genre’s roots. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins turned what could have been a regular blues ballad into a Halloween anthem when he recorded “I Put a Spell on You” in 1956. Before that, Robert Johnson purportedly sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads of Mississippi highways in the early ‘30s. Nearly 100 years after Johnson, horror rock still exists, and continues to evolve.

You could argue that horror psychedelia, the spawn of scary movies and distortion-driven rock ‘n’ roll, began in earnest in 1966, when Austin’s the 13th Floor Elevators released their debut album, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. (That band was one of the first to describe themselves as “psychedelic.”) Roky Erickson, the group’s singer and guitarist, wrote songs rife with drive-in B-movie imagery, which continued into his solo career. He released his defining record The Evil One, in 1980, following a stint in a mental institution, and its songs were full of horrors both real and fictional. By that time, Erickson’s psychedelic sound had been adapted, twisted, and mutated by acts like The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Alice Cooper.

Together, these artists sketched the blueprint for horror psychedelia, a mixed bag of rock artists united more by pulp fiction aesthetics than sound, but who share a few common elements. Horror psychedelia typically involves copious distortion, driving rhythms, and lavish atmosphere which accentuate its creepy lyrical tropes. Acts like White Zombie eventually blended industrial, noise, and heavy metal into the mix.

The founders of horror psychedelia still make music, but now stand among a sea of acolytes. Sweden’s Ghost covered Erickson and, alongside The Black Angels, brought him back to the zeitgeist. Below we’ve collected a murderer’s row of artists operating in this shadowy field.

Gold Flake Paint choose Julie's Haircut for top psyche picks at Liverpool Psyche Fest

Gold Flake Paint website has selected their picks for this years Liverpool’s International Festival of Psychedelia and Julie's Haircut head up their list.

This is what they say about Julie's Haircut as ones to watch:

With a huge following back home, these Italian psych veterans chose UK label Rocket Recordings to release their seventh studio album “Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin”. Over almost 20 years, their musical evolution has seen collaborations with Sonic Boom, Damo Suzuki and Peter Hook and taken them from early garage rock, through experimental sound territory to a more contained, yet still unpredictable blend of spacey, abstract rock. A rare treat.

Julie's Haircut reveal new single 'Burning Tree'

Julie's Haircut are releasing a brand new single on Friday (22nd) to coincide with their appearance at this years Liverpool Psych Festival. The single is called Burning Tree and it is backed up with a Gnoomes remix of the track Orpheus Rising, from their last album Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin

Listen to 'Burning Tree' here: Rocket YouTube

Buy download from here on Friday: Rocket Bandcamp

-

The press release reads...

Eclecticism has always played an essential role in Julie’s Haircut’s music. Never satisfied with their research and forever intrigued by the endless possibilities of the sonic texture, in a career now spanning twenty years the Italian sextex has been experimenting with different sources and traditions, from rock to improv. Thus it is not surprising that few months after the release of their seventh long player, and debut album with Rocket Recordings, the eclectic kraut-psych gem Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin, the band returns with a track that ideally fills the missing gap between post punk and electronica, taking the best from both worlds.

Burning Tree – a dreamlike tale of two pyromaniac lovers finding their way through the night – lifts up among waves of digital beats and analog synthesizers, while maintaining the band’s typical obsessive rhythms and repetitive licks. It is a song that sounds as if Mercury Rev collaborated with Hookworms and were produced by Giorgio Moroder, finally clashing somewhere on a patchouli soaked, post-industrial dancefloor.

Burning Tree is backed up with a remix of the track Orpheus Rising (track from their latest album) by label mates Gnoomes. The Russian three piece have taken the downtempo jazz  vocal of the original track and added an ever evolving, electronic-kraut, sonic-soundscape.

This single is released on the day the band play at this years Liverpool Festival of Psychedelia as part of a short tour:

19 / London Fields Brewhouse / London
20 / Green Door Store / Brighton
21 / Soup Kitchen / Manchester
22 / Liverpool Psych Fest / Liverpool

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs in Get Into This's bands to watch at Liverpool Psych Fest

They say:

PigsPigsPigsPigsPigsPigsPigs:
DISTRICT, September 23
If you’ve seen the name once, you’re unlikely to forget it, and all the same if you’ve heard the band’s music, you’d do well to shift them from your consciousness. Pigs x7 as they are more commonly known to save you all that plosive effort, hail from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and produce mighty psych metal that arrives still smoking from the depths of hell.

Think mind-melting riffs and blood-curdling, echoed yelps that will get even the tamest of chap nodding his tuft of hair to the haunting, doom rhythm. Boasting lengthy jams and unfathomable synergy, the Rocket Recordings quartet will transport you through a wormhole to the dark expanses of the universe with a sore neck and a blown mind.

Goat reveal new ltd live LP 'Fuzzed in Europe'

We are excited to reveal that Goat are releasing a ltd live LP called Fuzzed in Europe exclusively on Rocket – it will be available on ltd LP and digital on 27 October

Listen to a little taster here: Rocket Youtube

Buy Ltd LP: Rocket Bandcamp

Buy download: iTunes

See what The Quietus say about it here: The Quietus

-

The press release reads:

When the masked Swedish collective Goat toured Europe in the Autumn of 2016 to promote their then recently released third album Requiem - the band came up with the idea to record every show.

On returning back to their home town of Korpilombolo, Goat painstakingly went through all the recordings and have to picked out 6 tracks to be released on for limited live album Fuzzed in Europe.

Goat picked these 6 tracks in particular as they are different versions to what is found on the releases the songs originally came from and the band liked the idea that these versions are documented onto vinyl.

Goat’s live reputation is second to none – since their first public shows in 2012 they have stunned audiences across the globe. The bands brand of dancable, tribal psychedelia is guaranteed to create mass hysteria from the wanting crowds – Goat know how to create music that is made for the ‘head’ as well as the ‘body’.

There are rumours of Goat disappearing into the hills – that they have hung up their masks now for good and have slipped away as quietly as they arrived on to the scene. Whether this is true or not, we don’t know, but even if they have or have not disbanded from public view, this is a great document of their immersive power to cherish, it celebrates band completely at the top of their game.

The eye popping beautiful artwork for Fuzzed in Europe was created by the great poster artist Adam Pobiak – who has worked with everyone from Soundgarden to the Justice and Swans to Flaming Lips.

The ltd LP is released ltd to 2,250 copies worldwide and comes in two different colour variants ('Exploding sun' splatter – Rocket shop exclusive / 'Green & Black' splatter - Indie shop exclusive) – it will also be available digitally.

NARC reviews Housewives – FF061116 LP

It reads:

In the past couple of years, Rocket Recordings have pulled off the enviable trick of maintaining some sterling quality control whilst simultaneously moving further away from what might once have been perceived as a house style: the past 12 months has seen them some remarkable albums from acts as diverse as Pigs x7, Julie’s Haircut, Kuro and Gnod (in their raging, bass-driven, agit incarnation).

Indeed, it’s that recent Gnod album that the new Housewives record – their second – most resembles at times. FF061116 might be Rocket’s most uncompromising release yet, as Housewives channel everything from eighties industrial grind to post-punk polyrhythms to the most angular hardcore – imagine a REALLY unhinged, rhythm-driven Birthday Party.

At times the ‘excerpt’ approach irks a little – tracks start and stop unexpectedly, as if the track is one snippet from a longer work (perhaps it is) but even after a dozen listens I’m still checking to see the player hasn’t skipped. FF061116 isn’t a record of wild variety – Housewives pound each groove into submission before moving onto the next – and it’s bleak stuff, but there’s a power and fierce intent here that’s to be applauded. 4/5

Staf Magazine interviews Hey Colossus

Roughly translated, it reads:

Paul Sykes is the lead vocalist and lyricist for English band Hey Colossus, who recently released his ninth album, " The Guillotine ". An album that returns to immerse them in their particular universe of melancholy, saturated guitars, urgent rhythms and a certain air kraut rock that, without getting to dominate all its musical spectrum, gives them a fresh and original air. We talked to Paul about his career, his band and his motivations, and he told us some very interesting things. Then we leave you with the interview, we hope you enjoy it.

Where did you grow up and what is your artistic background?
I grew up in front of a psychiatric hospital in a small rural town in the south-east of England. I grew up doing drawings because I thought that if I did not do something, draw or whatever, I would be getting into the psychiatric. It was a good motivation.

Give us a brief description of your profile as an artist. What do you do and why do you love to do it?
I sing and write the lyrics of the band Hey Colossus. It helps me get out of my house and communicate with people living in different parts of the UK and around the world that I would not normally do if I were not in the band…

Housewives – FF061116 in The Quietus's Albums of the Month

It reads:

The second album from south London Housewives, now worthy stablemates to Hey Colossus and Gnod at Rocket Recordings, contains rage and skronk, tumbling drums and half-strangled wails, as well as soothing warm buildups and music to jerk-dance to. Opener 'Excerpt 1' is relaxing, but in the way that a frog might find a pan of water relaxing until it begins to simmer. Thereafter we are in roiling territory, with locked-tight rhythms and half-formed vocals, juddering drones and dizzying electronics. It's strong stuff, and lovely. Anna Wood

Loud and Quiet reviews Housewives live at End of the Road

It reads:

Housewives’ combination of ecstatic skronk and feral, deliciously deviant groove feeds directly off that, and accordingly becomes the evening’s highlight, full of taught restraint, mesmeric incantations and a pulsating unity. With screwdrivers jammed into fretboards, blaring sax textures and a rolling togetherness throughout, the band start to resemble some sort of 20-limbed sea creature in front of an audience that seems as terrified as they are fascinated.

Read Quietus interview with Joe from Hey Colossus

It reads:

Hey Colossus are stalwarts of the UK underground, a scene that has changed beyond recognition since they formed. Ahead of their set on our stage at Sea Change this weekend, bassist Joe Thompson looks at the rapidly changing world of DIY and asks, does the concept still exist?

When Hüsker Dü signed to Warners in 1987, noted puritan Ian MacKaye of Fugazi observed that once-DIY bands signing major meant they were no longer "confederates in the same conspiracy". To talk about the term DIY in relation to how one acts with one's music is both personal - and a minefield. Once you step out of your bedroom shouting about your music you're arguably already one step away from being PURE DIY...
